Distribution and Transmission
Filariasis is spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. It is present in tropical areas of Africa, India (especially in the south), parts of Southeast Asia and Central and South America.
Prevention
There is no vaccine available. The best prevention is avoiding mosquito bites. When out of doors cover up by wearing long trousers and long sleeved tops. Spray insect repellent on all exposed skin (DEET based). Clothes can also be soaked in a dilute solution of DEET (Diethyltoluamide) or sprayed with a dilute solution of permethrin.
In sleeping quarters - well before sunset:
 |
Close windows and doors or attend to screens |
 |
Spray rooms with a 'knockdown' insecticide (pyrethrum) aerosol spray (a mosquito net soaked with pyrethrum is essential in un-screened accommodation) |
Signs and Symptoms
The first symptom is usually fever and swelling of the infected area.
Treatment
Early intervention is important, seek medical treatment if you suspect Filariasis.
