Summary
Although Typhoid is present Worldwide it is of most concern in countries where food and water may be contaminated with sewerage - specifically, Africa, the Far East and South America. Its transmission is usually via contaminated food and drink.
Signs and Symptoms
The symptoms are fever, headache, confusion, vague abdominal pain and constipation. Rash like ‘Embolic’ rose spots may also occur. Paratyphoid fever, caused by S. paratyphi A, B or C, is a milder illness than typhoid and rose spots may be more common.
Recommendation for Travellers
It is possible to vaccinate against Typhoid – this is recommended for people travelling to areas where food and water contamination is likely (this does not prevent against paratyphoid)
Having previously contracted Typhoid does not protect you from contracting Typhoid another time.
Treatment
Typhoid is primarily diagnosed with blood tests – and can be treated with antibiotics.
